The limit of (1/(x-8)) as x goes to 8 is not infinity. The two-sided limit does not exist. From the left, it goes to negative infinity because 7.9 - 8 = -.1, a negative number. From the right, it does go to infinity because 8.1 - 8 = 0.1, a positive number.
